Desalination is not simply separating salt from water, it is turning unpalatable, saline water into potable, drinkable water.

Potable Water is getting scarcer as we read! Seawater Desalination to acquire potable drinking water is part of what we at PRISM do, to further Water Sustainability.

To target the growing need of reliable water solutions that are affordable and accessible as a fundamental right, PRISM is committed towards the process of Desalination with our technology partners.

is the synonym for Desalination!

Desalination is a process that takes away mineral components from saline water. More generally, desalination refers to the removal of salts and minerals from a target substance.

Saltwater is desalinated to produce water suitable for human consumption or irrigation. One by-product of desalination is salt. Desalination is used on many seagoing ships and submarines. It is a concept that mainly focuses on providing drinkable water to people. Along with recycled wastewater, it is one of the few rainfall-independent water sources.

Due to its high energy consumption, desalinating sea water is generally costlier than acquiring fresh water from rivers or groundwater, water recycling or water conservation. However, as the cost-effective alternatives are not always available, and depletion of reserves is a critical problem worldwide, in many places, desalination is the only answer. Desalination processes are usually either driven by thermal (e.g. distillation) or electrical (e.g., photovoltaic or wind power) as the primary energy types.

Currently, approximately 1% of the world’s population is dependent on desalinated water to meet daily needs, but the as per studies, it is expected to reach a 14% by 2025.

Methods to desalinate water can be both energy consuming or energy efficient. Methods range from Solar Distillation, Vacuum Distillation, Vapour Compression Distillation. Reverse Osmosis, Freeze Thaw, Wave-powered Distillation etc. With costs of desalination using traditional methods being ever on the increase, its kind of becoming a trend to adopt more renewable and sustainable solutions. The Solar, Wave-powered methods come in there.
